Part of the territory, comprising the outlying wards of the regional capital, to the right of the River Tanaro, is also included in another itinerary, called "Colli Astiani", while the other outlying wards, to the left of the river, are part of this route, called "Colli di Alfieri", in memory of the great Astigiano playwright.
The route comprises valleys and hills, in an ideal connection between the two motorway tollgates (Asti East and Asti West), whilst also allowing visitors to pass through the centre of the city.
The exit from Asti East makes it possible to access, to the right, a lower hilly area which crosses Pontessuero and Caniglie, passing on to Portacomaro. The latter name distinguishes both an autonomous Commune and an Asti outlying ward where the largest winegrowing company in Piedmont, Castello del Poggio, is located with approximately 140 apportioned hectares. After a brief trip along the Asti-Casale state highway the Alfieri route continues across green valleys - Valmaggiore, Valgera, Valmanera - to then climb up to the Viatosto pass, embellished with a small but magnificent Romanesque church.

Visitors then come down again into a wide valley, which comprises Sessant, Serravalle and Casabianca, along a state highway that heads towards Chivasso. Entering in a side valley takes you to Montegrosso Cinaglio and then on to Valleandona, a protected archaeological area with extensive fossil strata. Having passed the main road and Asti-Torino motorway, to the south there are the outlying wards of Palucco, Revignano, Santo Spirito, Vallarone, Valmadonna and Vaglierano and finally Variglie, looking out across the Tanaro and situated along the old Asti-Alba road. From here it is possible to access the city with its large historic centre, full of towers, historic palaces, splendid pedestrian areas all arranged within a municipal layout that is clearly Roman in origin. The cathedral and its piazza are quite extraordinary, and not by chance constitute the starting point for the city's major event: the Asti Palio (third Sunday in September) comprising a splendid procession and bare-backed horse racing.
Another important event in Asti is the 'festival delle sagre', a gastronomic delight of considerable proportions, with more than 40 ovens and cookers set up in the piazza, all providing traditional peasant cooking. This event (third week-end in September) is preceded on the Sunday morning by a folklore procession in costume. Even older is the Carolingian Fair on the first Wednesday in May, an enormous market for all kinds of goods. On the fourth Sunday of each month, on the other hand, there is the antiques fair.

Naturally the centre of Asti also offers numerous occasions for gastronomic and restaurant exploration, all inspired by a great sense of tradition and particularly abundant in exclusive specialities. The typical products of this route, in addition to wines, are cold cuts, included the exclusive "salame cotto", and typical sweets and pastries (torrone, 'paste di meliga', 'brutti e buoni', 'egiziani' etc.).
