12 Communes are involved, the original nucleus of the Comunità Montana which has taken the name of "Langa Astigiana Valle Bormida". More specifically these are: Bubbio, Cassinasco, Cessole, Loazzolo, Mombaldone, Monastero Bormida, Olmo Gentile, Roccaverano, San Giorgio Scarampi, Serole, Sessame and Vesime.
The route is a long ring, which winds along tight bends up to a maximum height of 759 metres (Roccaverano). The main access points are: from the north, the road which from Canelli climbs up to Cassinasco; a few kilometres further to the east, there is the road which climbs from Calamandrana to Sessame. Arriving from Savona, access to the route is provided from Cortemilia to Vesime or to Mombaldone; or from Bistagno (Acqui Terme-Savona state highway) to Monastero Bormida.
The characteristic feature of this territory is its splendid high hilly and mountain scenery, with specialised farming (goat herding and goats' milk cheese, chestnuts, fruit, medicinal herbs etc.) though wine-growing is rather limited. The countryside is dotted with superb historic centres and defensive towers together with numerous castles and stone houses.
The local gastronomy is simple and tasty. Some of the typical dishes (polenta, risotto) are also the subject of autumn festivities.
The range of nature trails and paths at mid altitudes is quite extraordinary. It is also possible to observe many animals and the climate is excellent, not at all conditioned by the activities in the valley bottom.
